On 14 November 2017, Oscar Kardolus passed away, having lost his battle with cancer. Oscar was very active in Dutch fencing, with various roles in the national federation, KNAS. He and his expertise will be missed.
Oscar was a fencer from a young age and kept on fencing until quite recently. He has won countless national titles over his career, both as a senior and as a veteran. He also won medals at European and world championships for veterans.
Oscar has been stimulating veterans fencing in the Netherlands for a long time, with official functions for a decade. He was the organizer of the two most important tournaments for veterans: the VetCup and the National Championships.
It wasn’t just the Dutch veterans fencing world that knew Oscar. He was the Dutch representation in the EVF (European Veterans Fencing) and member of the Veterans Commission in the European Fencing Confederation, EFC, where he had just been elected for his fourth consecutive term. He was a regular at the world and European championships for veterans, both as head of delegation and as fencer.
It was his international involvement that initiated the project to organize the European Championships for Veterans in the Netherlands. Regrettably he will not be able to see the completion of this project.
We extend our condolences to his family.
Sonja Lendi, President of the Organizing Committee
